How I embarrassed my kids

We lived on a busy road but right across that busy road was a huge huge development.  In fact, in the community we lived in, Gloucester Township, NJ, when people heard you lived there, would ask "which development?"

I had a nearly 1/2-acre garden and needed mulch.  One of the best kinds of mulch, because it breaks down pretty quickly but keeps the weeds down before it does, is grass clippings.  All the suburban dads would cut their grass on the weekends, then bag up the clippings and leave it for the trash guys to pick up Monday morning.  You already know what I'm going to say.  We'd go around the neighborhood in the Land Yacht "\"\\"\\"\""(a 1974 Pontiac Grand Safari that was ALREADY 20 years old when we got it) and pick up bags of clippings.  First Mom would get out and FEEL THE BAGS to see if they were, indeed, grass clippings (they'd be mushy, and pretty warm).  Sometimes I'd be on the way home from picking my kids up from school.  The older two would CROUCH DOWN in the back seat because their friends LIVED in the neighborhood we were cruisin' through and trashpicking.  They couldn't be seen but you can believe I'd HEAR all that complaining whining and general bitching from the depths of the back seat.  Child number three, of course, was so mellow this never bothered him, plus he was probably reading to himself at the time.

All this reminiscing is by way of suggesting that if YOU live in a development, you too can embarrass your children by trashpicking your neighbor's bags!  Or, do what I did, and contact the landscape people directly.  "\"\\"\\"\""They have to put the grass clippings somewhere, might as well be in your compost pile!!
