The Grammys Recap

Just some thoughts on the recent Grammy Awards show. First, I thought the opening segment in which LL Cool J lead everyone in a prayer for Whitney Houston was very touching. So many times the LA entertainment community is blasted by people for their lack of belief in God, yet everyone joined in the prayer.
I enjoyed the tribute to Glen Campbell and thought it was a good idea to offer this up now while he can be a part of it. Do you remember those great summer replacement shows that featured artists such as Glen Campbell, Tom Jones, Johnny Cash and others?
The producer did a very good job of keeping the show flowing back and forth from one music genre to the next, thus allowing everyone of every musical taste and interest to remain engaged in the program.
I think Adele could sing "Rolling in the Deep" acapella and still give you chills.
"Wasting Light" may just be the best work ever by The Foo Fighters.

Recently I complained about the Doobie Brothers playing the the area and not knowing about it. So with that in mind, two big name rock and roll bands are coming this November. Guns N' Roses will play the arena on November 20th and REO Speedwagon will be a Penn's Peak on November 10th. Don't say you didn't know. |

The very first rock concert I ever attended was the Doobie Brothers in Kingston back in the 70's. Great show, all the hits at least up to that point and I couldn't hear for nearly two days after the show. I knew the band was out touring again this summer and would have loved to see them if someone had promoted their appearance in the area. Maybe it sold out and no promotion was required but I really don't think that was the case. The local concert scene is busier than ever between shows at Montage, the casino, the arena, the SCC and the Kirby which is a good thing for music fans of NEPA. But you got to let us know....hit it up on Facebook, Tweet it, run some ads....you might even try smoke signals....just let the people know. If you book it....they will come, if they know about it. |

Summer is here and with it some of those great summer time songs. You know the ones that bring back the memories of care free days at the shore or the pool, relaxing with friends or partying on the patio. So here are some of my favorites:
Eric Clapton's"I Shot the Sheriff"
Mungo Jerry's "In the Summertime"
Wings "Silly Love Songs"
First Class "Beach Baby"

You May Not Know His Name, but you know him.

Most songwriters are always linked to one special number from their collective work. When that song is a TV theme song for a show that airs for nearly a decade, people will always remember your work, if they don't know your name. Such is the case for the theme from the NBC show "The Golden Girls" and "Thank You for Being a Friend" written and record by Andrew Gold.
Mr. Gold hit the top 40 charts with that song and "Lonely Boy" a hit in the 70's. That is pretty much it from Andrew Gold, who died earlier this month at the age of 59. Next time you watch a re-run of "The Golden Girls" at least you will know his name. |

We are introducing a new feature to the evenings in the Mountain Cabin. We have all been to concerts and have heard first hand how artists doing something a little different with their music when they are performing live. Maybe its feeding of the audience....or they just welcome a chance to change things up a bit, but live cuts bring something extra with them to the ear.
So with that in mind, we have introduced Live at Eight....each night we will have five live cuts of some of your favorite Mountain music. Have a suggestion, pass it along via email...and we always welcome comments at www.102themountain.com |

If This is Spring?

Then bring back winter, please. The first couple of days of spring have been filled with some of the worst winter weather of the year. Where is that thaw? I know it's staying lighter longer...but that only allows me to see the snow on the ground. I thought we were making some progress with the warm spell during the last few days of winter. But no, spring had to turn it around and bring us more snow, ice and sleet. Where is that groundhog named Phil hiding these days? |

Yes it is that wonderful time of the year again when white baseballs are being hit and thrown against the green grass of Florida. I know the games don't count...some players are working to make the team for the first time....others are hoping to stay forone more season...and everyone is 100% sure they will win it all this year....but I still enjoy watching it. Last year I friended Ike Davis the young first baseman for the Mets....and he recently posted LGM....I agree. |

In case you missed in the world's oldest teenager and beachcomer Jimmy Buffett is recovering from a fall from a stage. Finishing up a tour down under Jimmy went off the stage head or face first....ouch. By all accounts, while he was slightly injured, it appears he is on the road to recovery. Summer wouldn't be the same without his concerts... |

Gerry Rafferty R.I.P.

Maybe it was because of the great sax bit or just the longer intro that as a DJ you could talk over, when DJ's did that kind of thing, but Baker Street was always one of my favorite songs, so much so I purchased the album just because of the single.
At the time I didn't know that Gerry Rafferty was part of Steelers Wheel but I always liked Stuck in the Middle with You. Good song, not great...that took on a new life when it was used in the movie Resevoir Dogs, a flick I haven't seem.
Well you know know Gerry died recently due to liver problems and many have written about his work. However a friend of mine, Andy Palumbo from WNEP, came up with the best line about Baker Street in his blog of Jan. 5th and I quote: "Do yourself a favor. Get yourself a good copy of "Baker Street" and a great set of headphones. I mean a quality pair. "Baker Street" has to be one of the best headphone songs ever."
Right on Andy. |
